Ryukyu Middle School kicks off Read Across America with a Starbooks cafe

The Ryukyu Middle Library Information Center transformed into a vibrant hub of literary delight with its enchanting Starbooks Cafe event during lunch on March 3, 2025. This event marked the beginning of the much anticipated Read Across America celebration.
Students were treated to an immersive experience, sampling an array of books while savoring tea. The atmosphere was magical, with the library metamorphosed into a cozy cafe. Soft jazz melodies filled the air, creating a serene backdrop for the literary adventure. Students had the chance to explore new genres and discover hidden gems among the book selections.
“As a long-time book lover, it really warms my heart to see students who still enjoy cozying up with a book,” said Dr. Tracy McKinney SPED Assessor. “This is one of my favorite events of the school year.”
In addition to the book sampling, students were introduced to Read Across America events, including the highly anticipated March Book Madness. This exciting competition invites students to form teams, select a book, and create a captivating video presentation about it. Throughout the month, students will engage in friendly rivalry, voting for their favorite book, with the ultimate winner crowned at the end of March.
This event was a testament to the collaborative efforts of Dr. Tracy McKinney, Andrea Petz, and Timia Collins, who have passionately organized this event for the past three years. Their dedication transformed the library into a haven for book lovers, offering students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the joy of reading.
The Starbooks Cafe event was not just about books and tea; it was about fostering a love for reading, building a sense of community, and creating lasting memories. Students left with new books in hand and a renewed enthusiasm for literature.
