Ryukyu Middle School fine arts season marks America’s 250th anniversary
OKINAWA, Japan – Ryukyu Middle School’s fine arts department recently concluded a series of events that blended seasonal nostalgia with a patriotic tribute to the upcoming America 250 celebration.
The festivities ran from May 14 to June 3, opening with beginning and intermediate choirs performing a lively set of summer tunes.
Under the direction of the choir and drama teacher Ms. Snook, students performed the opening showcase with a spirited rendition of "Surf’s Up," a medley arranged by Roger Emerson. Throughout the evening, students brought the stage to life by singing, dancing, and incorporating kazoos into their beach-themed setlist.
On May 19, the spotlight shifted to the school bands for a concert honoring America’s 250th birthday, with Mr. Williams leading a program of American compositions. Performances by the School of Rock band, directed by Mr. Smith, and the Bechtel Elementary band closed out the evening.
“I liked playing Anthem of Liberty,” said seventh-grade clarinetist Raegan. “I enjoyed playing all of the high notes.”
Following a brief typhoon delay, the season concluded on June 3 with the annual Spring Art Show curated by art teacher Ms. Lloyd. Students gathered to admire a gallery of their peers’ artwork on display. Attendees participated by voting for their favorite pieces across a wide range of categories, organized by grade level and two or three-dimensional artwork.
This series of events highlights the Ryukyu Middle School community and its exceptional educators, who foster a vibrant culture of artistic excellence.
