Habu Book Crew Welcomes New Members at Ryukyu Middle School
Okinawa, Japan – The Habu Book Crew at Ryukyu Middle School is expanding, with the energetic team of student library assistants recently welcoming several new members.
Current crew members trained new members in a variety of essential library tasks. Now in its second year, the program continues to grow, offering students a meaningful way to contribute to their school community.
To join the Habu Book Crew, students must meet high standards of academic performance and personal responsibility. Once accepted, they take on duties such as shelving books, organizing shelves, and collecting books from Seminar classes. Since Ryukyu Middle Information Center shares its space with Bechtel Elementary, the library is located on a different floor than most classrooms, making the Book Crew an essential link between students and library resources.
Crew members also assist with using MackinVision, the library’s digital catalog, and help check books in and out at the kiosk station. Beyond daily operations, they support special events like the recent Character Con, promote Book Battle, create displays, and recommend books, which helps to create a vibrant and engaging library environment.
Fellow librarians, especially Barb Hertz, have inspired many of the program’s materials and ideas. Thanks to this spirit of collaboration and the enthusiasm of Ryukyu Middle School students, the Habu Book Crew continues to grow and flourish, proving that libraries are not just places to read and explore, but places to lead.
